Top hair stylist Tara Downes dishes her tips for updating your hair for autumn/winter.

Tara is a colour expert, professionally endorsed and certified by Redken, who runs Poise Hair Salon in Milltown, a gorgeous new Redken flagship salon.

Check out her advice on how to subtly enhance your hair for the coming season, while keeping it in tip-top condition.

What are your top tips for changing your hair colour for autumn winter?
For autumn winter I like to work with what the client existing already has. I like to introduce warmer tones, think caramel and honey tones, subtle but noticeable to keep your hair colour relevant season to season without having to change dramatically and ensuring the integrity of the hair. Dramatically changing hair colour from season to season can cause permanent damage to hair, the most important factor in hair colour looking its best is when hair is in its optimum condition. Which is why I prefer to implement small changes over time.

What are the hottest hairstyles at the moment?
Bangs are right on trend. Think 1970’s. Bold and blunt, the bangs have to be short in the middle and longer at the temples. Bangs work on all face shapes, hair textures, and lengths. They’re a popular request in my salon for this season.

What are the essential products for updating your style for the coming season?
Redken’s Pillow Proof Express Primer is a first step for all styles. It’s designed to reduce blow drying time and protect hair up to 450° F. What I really love about the primer is it amplifies and locks in the benefits of any other styling product you use. It repairs the hair from inside out, meaning your locks will be three times stronger and will boast lasting volume.

I tend to layer the primer with Pureology’s Miracle filler to take brittle dry hair to glossy shiny hair in just a couple of sprays.

Are there any easy up styles people can try at home?
The classic sleek ponytail has been seen all over the catwalks for autumn/winter season. A glamorous easy to do look to get that extra day from your hair when it needs to be washed. Spray hair some Redken quick dry hairspray,  gather hair at the nape of the neck leaving some volume at the crown, then secure with a hair elastic. Take a small amount of hair and wrap it around to cover the hair elastic, secure in place with a bobby pin and voila, instant glamour.
